PPQs

I'm not sure if this link will work but it's worth a try - it contains all the A2 Philosophy questions in the past 8 years....

Revision Day Confirmation

Morning,

Friday's Revision Day will be held at Hyde Clarendon College. They've been very kind considering their own students have already started back this week.

We will meet outside the main entrance to Hyde Clarendon College by 9:55 on Friday morning with the aim of finishing at 3pm.

As daft as it may sound, I do need written permission from home to say that you're allowed to be there and that parents/carers know where you are. Please bring a note to this effect and have it signed.

I wrote 2 essays, a 4 page summary of omnipotence and an 8 page overview of God's eternity yesterday. I firmly believe that a really focused session on Friday will have the 'Attributes of God' section nailed. Please bring files, books and paper. I'll bring the additional notes, A3 paper and colours. Bring omniscience homeworks as well as agreed. The Religious Language essay isn't due until next week.

Please leave a comment so as I know you've received this message (even though very few are actually following). Those who are following, please spread the word!

See you on Friday,

Mr Rainey

Revision Day Arrangements

Morning,
At the moment, finding a venue has proven difficult but I do have a few irons in the fire. I know we've been swaying between Thursday or Friday but I'd plump for the Friday if everyone can just note that change please. The reason is that I'll need to go in to school on Thursday to do all the photocopying of the essays and new mind maps.
In terms of a venue, Ashton library can only hold 18 and even then the room is only available for a few hours. Dukinfield library just keeps ringing out but there is the possibility of using Hyde Clarendon for the day. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know! We'll get somewhere but in the meantime please note that we'll do Friday 6th November (and I'll bring some Tayto crisps for Becky).
I hope you've all had a great Christmas and a good break/rest from the studies. Make the most of the extended holiday in early January by sorting a revision timetable and ensuring those days aren't wasted.

Work for Thursday 6th January

Morning,
I hope to be back tomorrow (Friday) but as you know I'm not 100% at the minute. I apologise for missing today but I have set work. We're starting a new section on 'The Attributes of God' which is very interesting. You will need your blue books for the remainder of this module.
To keep it simple to start with, I want you to work as whole classes on the following ideas:
1) Collect the pink and yellow sheets from MT and put them in the next section of your files.
2) Read the first page of the pink booklet only as a background to the topic.
3) using the first page of the yellow sheet, complete the 3 starter tasks which I'll come back to on Friday (Monday for Daniella's group).
4) using your blue books (I can't recall the page number), find the pages on what Aquinas meant by God being 'wholly simple' and write a paragraph on it. Yello 409-410 may help slightly.

Essays on Religious Language are due- i'll collect the remainder on Friday. Those who've emailed their essays already may be fortunate to have them returned on Friday depending on how I feel tomorrow. I've a feeling the boredom and restlessness will result in marking being done.

Finally, and this is important- i've booked Dukinfield library from 10am til 1pm (it closes then) on Saturday for those resitting Philosophy. This has been in the diary a while so no excuses for not attending. I'll be focusing on Evil and Suffering and Cosmological Aegument mostly so the other areas are over to you. I may squeeze in the Moral Argument as well depending on time.

Work hard today! Daniella's group have Mass during the lesson but do what you can if you're free at any point.

Regards and good luck,

Mr Rainey

Religious Language Quizbusters

Hot off the shelf!
A newly made Quizbusters covering the key scholars and viewpoints in the Religious Language section. Time will be given for 1 or 2 games in lessons this week so if you're clever enough to check this blog before the lessons then you have a head start!
Play as many times as you like - it will help your learning and progress....

This week's focus will be on developing our revision mind maps (group activity developing in to whole class building) and looking at PPQs on this area.

Enjoy,

Snow Work

Good day to all 6 of you - you now have the responsibility of texting the remaining 15 who're not yet following my wonderful blog.

The purpose of setting up the blog was for occasions such as this. As luck would have it, I don't actually have any Year 13 today (or yesterday for that matter) but I thought i'd give some words of wisdom and ideas in case other subjects haven't been forthcoming.

As it is, both classes have the task on Critically Analysing Language Games and Bethan's class has the Life and Death essay as well. Both classes may find the following quotes useful at some point so please make a note of them:

"We must no more ask whether the soul and body are one than ask whether the wax and figure impressed on it are one." (Aristotle - Body and Soul topic)

"Truth is hard to tell. It sometimes needs fiction to make it plausible." (Francis Bacon - this is a cracker to use in the 'myth' section)

The next 2 are especially for Charlotte....

1) We have 2 ears and 1 mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. (Epictetus)
2) It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it (Aristotle). This second one could also go against the narrowmindedness of Verificationists and Falsificationists.

The last part of this section is the known as the 'Via Negative' or 'Via Negativa'. It's tricky but do some independent research in preparation for next lesson. After that it's mindmap and PPQ time.

Enjoy and keep getting stuck in.
